Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association is Moving Forward! In 2009, after a two-year hiatus of, during which the activities of the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association (SLPWA) essentially ceased, a new group reorganized SLPWA under new leadership.   We are indebted to Richard Ahola, Mary Anne Kowalski and Phil Cianciotto who agreed to serve as interim officiers in the reconstituted organization as well as to Professor John Halfman who was custodian of the organization’s records and encouraged the re-formation of this organization.

By May, 2009, the association had over 200 membership renewals and SLPWA had indeed been reborn with a group of active and interested members who were willing to continue the development of the organization and its mission of stewardship for Seneca Lake and its watershed.  The reorganization committee held an annual meeting in August 2009 and unanimously elected a slate of directors reconstituting the Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association Board of Directors thus completing their reorganization effort.  Phil Cianciotto was elected President, Richard Ahola and Jim Bromka, Vice Presidents, Mary Anne Kowalski, Secretary and Robert Kayser, Treasurer for the year 2009- 2010.

At the Annual Meeting on August 18, 2010 four directors were elected and the following month officers chosen for the year 2010-2011.  The current board members and their terms of service are as follows:

After 24 months of operation, the new organization is active on a number of “fronts” involving issues that are of significant concern to the residents of the Seneca Lake watershed.  This website includes a discussion of the projects and issues that the association is addressing through the activities of its Board of Directors and others who have joined the association in an active role.  Today SLPWA has over 320 members and is continuing to grow.

Over the next year the organization plans to:
1.    Continue to expand membership in order to provide a broader voice for the lake and its watershed as a steward for the lake
2.    Develop educational and outreach programs for its members to provide them information on issues affecting Seneca Lake to include:
     a.    Marcellus Shale Gas Well Drilling
     b.    Lake Level Monitoring
     c.     Landfill Leachate and municipal sewage treatment
     d.    Maintenance of water quality in Seneca Lake
     e.    Proper disposal of pharmaceuticals
     f.     Proper use of lawn and garden chemicals/ the impact of improper use on the  lake
     g.    Agricultural land use in the watershed and how to minimize runoff impact on the lake
3.    Work with other environmental and community organizations to support its activities and goals
4.    Further develop its membership communications via “LakeWatch” and our website www.senecalake.org.
