Hazardous Spill Reporting

Do you know who to call to report a hazardous spill or other environmental issue within the Seneca Lake Watershed? The NYS Department of Conservation has provided us with the following contact numbers.

  • The 24 hour hotline for reporting spills statewide is
    1-800-457-7362.
  • The day time number to report spills in the Seneca Lake watershed is 518-226-5433/585-226-5436 for the Region 8 Spill Response office.
  • After normal business hours (after 4:45 p.m.), spills can be reported to the DEC through a dispatch service operated by the Hornell Fire Department by calling 607-324-4504.
  • Information about the DEC programs can be found on the internet at www.dec.ny.gov

Reduce Your Watershed Footprint

Runoff of rainwater into streams and lakes is the primary source of phosphorus that harms water quality. Both lawn fertilizer and dishwasher soap that drains into leaking septic tanks can contribute. Reduce your use of these substances and/or find one with a lower phosphate level.
