Hazardous Spill Reporting

Do you know who to call to report a hazardous spill or other environmental issue within the Seneca Lake Watershed? The NYS Department of Conservation has provided us with the following contact numbers.

Reduce Your Watershed Footprint

Runoff of rainwater into streams and lakes is the primary source of phosphorus that harms water quality. Both lawn fertilizer and dishwasher soap that drains into leaking septic tanks can contribute. Reduce your use of these substances and/or find one with a lower phosphate level.

Voice Your Opinion

A Bill, #S3780 has just recently been introduced in the New York State Senate to “to amend the environmental conservation law and the agriculture and markets law, in relation to phosphorus in household cleansing products and lawn fertilizer.” Members of SLPWA are encouraged to let their local New Your State Assembly and Senate members know that they support this legislation to reduce phosphate in dishwashing liquids and lawn fertilizers as a way to reduce the amount of phos-phates entering the Seneca Lake watershed which leads to higher phosphate levels in Seneca Lake and encourages greater weed growth. Several outlets including at least one of the “big box” stores have advertised availability of no phosphate fertilizer for lawn use this Spring. Please do your part to help reduce the phosphates entering Seneca Lake.
